Social Media Competition - First Class Competition Results

What is the Social Media Competition?
The Social Media Competition is a student competition for marketing students in the Marketing Diploma program at Sheridan College, Ontario, Canada.  Students compete over a 2 -3 week period using the following metrics: Blog Visitors, Facebook Likes and Twitter Followers.

How does the Social Media Competition Work?
Each student group selects a unique niche topic for their blog.  They then create web content for the blog (written, video and Infographic) and market their blogs using Facebook and Twitter.  The competition is divided into several phases.  For a look at all student blogs competing, please visit our daily Social Media Competition Newsletter.

Congratulations to the top three Sheridan Digital Marketing 1 student groups for their outstanding performance in the Social Media Competition - First Class Competition Results!

Social Media Competition - Baseline Results

The Social Media Competition of Summer 2014 is off to a great start.   During the Baseline phase, students strive to achieve high Blog Users, Facebook Like and Twitter Followers.

Well done to all students for their Baseline results!  Although the mark was determined by a rubric (it was not a competition), it is interesting to note the top two in each category.  This is because the next phase of the competition is the First Class Competition , in which student groups are in competition.  The group with the highest result gets the highest mark in the category.

A special congrats to the following groups for their outstanding Baseline Results:

Useful PC Resources for the Video Assignment

Need some help with the video assignment?  There are many ways to create videos.  You can use whatever software you like.  The list below is very simple (and free).

These are the tools I used to create my sample video for the Digital Marketing 1 class.  I simply "repurposed" some content I already had regarding the Social Media Competition.

Recording Video

  • I recorded a short video with my laptop camera using the free Windows Movie Maker.
    • I had to download from Microsoft, but it was free.
    • I recorded a video and saved it on my laptop.
    • Here's a helpful "how-to": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WiFjaOrkZ-c
Adding video, animations and music to a PowerPoint

  • I added the intro video to the Power Point. (Insert->Video)
  • I used the animation feature of PowerPoint to make the slides interesting.
  • I added background music (similar steps to play the video automatically).
    • Here's a helpful "how-to": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpEa_m4ORsk
Saving a PowerPoint as a Movie
  • Here's a "how-to" video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTda5Ypv9U0
  • The movie is saved as a "Windows Media Video"
Uploading the Movie to YouTube
  • There are privacy settings that you control.  You can choose public, unlisted, or private.
    • See: https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/157177
  • Here is a link that describes how to upload your movie to YouTube.
